Our 4th of July is going to be extra special this year. Lzzy Lou is celebrating her first birthday! What do you give a dog for her birthday? You give her love, chew toys, and a homemade pup cake! Read on to see how we made Lzzy Lou’s pup cake.

HOW TO MAKE A PUP CAKE?

There were plenty of recipes to choose from when we googled how to make a pup cake. Some seemed to have too much baking soda, a few seemed like a cake designed for a sled dog team, and some seemed bland. A few added honey in the frosting and some even had meat. We wanted Lzzy to have a cake made especially for her so we got to work with what we knew were some of her favorite ingredients.

THE PUP CAKE RECIPE

Pup Cake Ingredients:

1 Cup Flour

1/2 Tsp Baking Soda

1/8  Cup Coconut Oil, Melted

1/2 Banana, Mashed

1 Egg

1/2 Cup Canned Pumpkin

1/2  Cup Unsweetened Applesauce

Frosting Ingredients:

1 Cup Plain Greek Yogurt

1/4 Cup Peanut Butter (make sure xylitol is not listed in the ingredients of the peanut butter you use)

INSTRUCTIONS

Cake:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease two 6 inch cake pans with the same avocado oil we used when we made Chicken Jerky Treats. In a bowl, combine the flour and baking soda. Set aside. In a separate bowl, mix together the melted coconut oil, egg, canned pumpkin, unsweetened applesauce, and banana. Add flour mixture to wet ingredients and combine. Split batter into prepared cake pans. Bake for 15-20 minutes. You will know the cake is ready when you insert a butter knife and it comes out clean. Let cakes cool for 15 minutes. When cool, loosen the edges and carefully flip cake onto serving plate.

Frosting:

Combine plain Greek yogurt and peanut butter.

Put It Together:

After the cake has cooled, level the bottom piece and spread frosting on top. Stack second cake piece on top of base layer. From here, it is up to you.  You can spread frosting on top, sides or both. Mini dog treats, shredded carrots, peas and/or blueberries all make good cake decorations. You can keep your pup cake in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Lzzy Lou loved her pup cake! Like a true one year old, she licked all the frosting off first. After that, we put the rest of the pup cake in the fridge for later. Next, she moved on to her JW Ever Tough Treat Pod followed by her Nylabone Power Chew. Pups can never have enough toys! Of course her favorite gift was a new bandana from her Lzzy Lou Collection featured on Rett & Co.
